If your workplace is about 3–7 miles from your home, walking or biking can transform your commute into an energizing start to the day. Instead of sitting in traffic, you’ll stay active and arrive feeling refreshed and ready to go.

GoMassCommute makes it easy to find safe, convenient routes while connecting you with a supportive network of local commuters. With helpful tools and maps, you can navigate bike-friendly streets, protected lanes, and smart shortcuts throughout Watertown.

As Watertown continues to expand its network of bike lanes and shared-use paths, commuting by bike or on foot is becoming safer and more efficient than ever. Whether you ride or walk, even part of your commute can make a meaningful difference.

When more people choose active transportation, everyone benefits—from stronger communities to healthier neighborhoods and less congestion on our roads. Choosing to bike or walk isn’t just good for you—it’s a simple, impactful way to support your community.

Moving Better Together

  • Taking transit, shuttles, walking, biking, carpooling, or vanpooling can support your health, save money, and reduce your environmental impact.

  • Walking or biking—even as part of your commute—is an easy way to add movement to your day and stay active. Active commuting can also help reduce stress and improve focus, so you arrive at work feeling more energized and ready to go.

  • Driving less means saving on fuel, parking, and vehicle maintenance costs, while regular physical activity can improve sleep and boost your daily energy.

  • When more people choose active transportation, it helps reduce traffic congestion and improves air quality—creating a healthier, more connected community for everyone.

Bike Infrastructure in Watertown

Watertown offers a variety of biking options for commuters, recreational riders, and families, with easy access to several connected trail systems throughout the Greater Boston area.

The Charles River Bike Path provides scenic paved riding along the river with connections to Boston, Cambridge, Newton, and Waltham. The Watertown-Cambridge Greenway offers a quieter multi-use path linking riders to Fresh Pond, Alewife, and the broader regional bike network, including the Minuteman Bikeway.

The area also offers beginner-friendly routes, protected bike lanes, Bluebikes stations, and local bike shops, making Watertown an increasingly bike-friendly community for commuting and recreation.

The Watertown TMA encourages everyone to ride and walk smart, follow the rules of the road, and help keep active travel safe for all. We partnered with NEMO to provide Emergency Bicycle Roadside Assistance.

We are also proud to support the Watertown Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee, Live Well Watertown, and local efforts to make the City of Watertown even more bike- and walk-friendly.
